Mounting threats to arts access can no longer be ignored!
Although the report undoubtedly paints a bleak picture of the state of the arts in the UK, today, Campaign for the Arts are filled with hope. They took their findings to Parliament on Monday 22nd July, presenting to an audience of MPs and peers.
It is time to send a clear message to decision-makers that things need to change. The arts make life better, and everybody should have opportunities to access them.
The State of the Arts report shows:
The UK's government spending on arts and culture is among the lowest in Europe, and it’s getting worse.
Since 2010, local government culture funding has fallen by 48% in England, 40% in Wales and 29% in Scotland.
Arts education is in crisis. GCSE and A-level entries in arts subjects have decreased by 47% and 29% respectively in the last 14 years. Arts and creative courses at English universities have suffered a 50% funding cut from the UK Government.
The earnings of arts professionals in the Cultural Sector are consistently below the UK median, with significant regional and gender pay disparities within that.
